Lean construction professionals and other industry leaders shared best practices and lessons learned at the AGC Building Contractors Conference on June 9-12 in Midway, Utah. The Conference included a full day of sessions sponsored by the Lean Construction Forum, which included an “introduction to lean” presentation and four case studies.

George Zettel with Turner Construction Co. led the introductory session titled “Lean Construction: A Basic Refresher” to a standing-room only audience. Immediately following, Tariq Abdelhamid with Enovio Consulting/Michigan State University provided an overview of four lean competency clusters. The afternoon sessions highlighted case studies that focused on the four competency clusters discussed earlier. The case studies were presented by Jennifer Oliverio, Linbeck Group; Dave MacNeel, Baker Concrete Construction; Thomas Demko, Burt Hill; and Kevin McClain, The Weitz Company.

Presentations from the Conference are available www.agc.org/building or by clicking here.

Integrated Project Delivery for Public and Private Owners explores the varying degrees of collaboration found in IPD, defining it as a philosophy and as a delivery method. The publication explores why owners should consider adopting IPD principles, how IPD fits in to related industry trends, such as BIM and Lean, and offers suggestions on how to integrate IPD principles into construction projects. Owners, general contractors and all project stakeholders will find Integrated Project Delivery for Public and Private Owners to be a useful resource regarding IPD.

The AGC of America National Committee Chair of the Year Award is presented to a chairperson in recognition of his/her outstanding achievements and accomplishments in the past year. This year Chuck Greco, president & CEO of the Linbeck Group LLC in Houston, Texas, was awarded this honor at AGC’s 91st Annual Convention and Pavilion in Orlando, Fla., for his leadership of the AGC Lean Construction Advisory Committee. Under Chuck’s guidance, the Lean Construction Advisory Committee launched the AGC Lean Construction Forum and its Web site. The Forum also held more than seven hours of educational sessions at the AGC Building Contractors Conference in January 2010 and hosted a session at the recent AGC Annual Convention.

Chuck spearheaded the development of a lean construction curriculum, credential, and instructor program, and is now leading the establishment of a business plan to implement these efforts. AGC President Doug Pruitt commented in presenting the award that “Chuck’s enthusiasm, leadership and passion for lean construction and the AGC community has led to numerous lean initiatives and a multitude of benefits for all AGC members.”
